Many tooth restoration patients shy away from treatment with dental implants out of the fear that the process is too complicated for their needs. Fortunately, the implant process is actually a rather simple method for restoring missing teeth, and can be broken down into five steps.
The implant process always begins with a consultation with Dr. Christopher Jackson here at our Belle Fourche office. During this consultation, Dr. Jackson will take the time to examine your oral health, taking note of your condition and needs. He will also discuss your smile goals, in order to best determine which tooth restoration treatment might best suit you.
During the consultation, Dr. Jackson may notice that your gums or jawbone have receded, making these structures too weak to properly support a dental implant. In order to restore your candidacy, the doctor may recommend a supplemental procedure. Depending on the severity of your case, these procedures can be applied months in advance of your implant’s placement, or even during the same visit.
Once your mouth is ready and in optimal health, an implant fixture will be placed directly into your jawbone to take the place of your missing tooth root. Once in position, the area will be stitched up so that it can heal. At this point, an abutment and temporary restoration may be attached to the implant fixture. However, if possible we prefer to wait to place these pieces until the fixture has had some time to heal.
Usually, the healing period lasts three to six months. During the healing period osseointegration works to fuse your implant fixture to your jawbone. We like to give our implant patients ample time to heal, as the success of this fusion is what allows dental implants to function and feel as well as they do.
After recovery, you will return to our office to have your customized restoration attached to the implant. Regardless of which restoration you choose to go with – be it crown, bridge, or overdenture – you can rest assured that your restoration will fit in perfectly among your remaining natural teeth. This quality is possible because our restorations are based on scans, pictures, and impressions taken of your remaining teeth.
Upon the completion of the implant process, you will be able to show off your beautiful new smile. Now that you’ve seen how simple the implant process really is, you are probably wondering about the supplemental procedures we mentioned above. So head to this page now to learn more.
